A municipal housing inspector is an inspector employed by a city, county or other municipality to check construction sites and verify that the projects meet code and are following the building plans. When someone is building a new home or doing major renovations, getting permits from the local municipality is part of the project. Inspectors must come out periodically to check that the project is on track and meeting local codes; they also have the task of ensuring the project is following the plans filed by the builder. An inspector can stop a project if it is not meeting building codes, does not have proper permits, is not following the filed plans or exhibits egregious safety violations. When an inspector puts in a stop order, all construction stops until the problems are resolved.
