Saltbox style refers to a particular type of architecture that first became popular in the United States during the Colonial period. It is aptly named because homes that are built in this style resemble the salt boxes of days gone by. Saltbox style homes can be either one, two or three stories high. They are typically very square on all sides and have a roof that contains a high pitch. The roof may be more slanted on one side than it is on the other, particularly whenever the home contains dormer windows or a front porch. Homes with this type of architecture normally have windows that are all the same size and shape, thereby giving the house a very symmetrical appearance. The exterior of one of these homes can be made of brick or wood; some may contain vinyl or aluminum siding as well.
