A deep-seal floor drain takes water from a basement floor and disposes of it in the sewer line. Most floor drains will pull water and dispose of it outside in a culvert or ditch. However, some jurisdictions require this type of water to exit through the sewer. This helps alleviate water run-off and prevents any chemicals or other substances from the basement from running on the ground or down the street. In case of floods, however, overwhelmed sewer lines may not be able to handle the water run-off. This can lead to further problems with flooding inside the structure. When doing a major house renovation, some home owners find they need to install a deep-seal floor drain in their basement. This brings the drain up to the current code in some jurisdictions.
