A domed ceiling is an architectural feature in which a ceiling projects upward like a sphere and does so without the support of any columns. This style of ceiling has been employed in many different types of architecture, from early-Renaissance Italian cathedrals to modern homes. The primary advantages of a domed ceiling include its ability to allow more natural light into the home as well as add a tremendously unique appearance to a central room within the home. A major appeal of the domed ceiling is that it frees up space for other things within a home. Because a load bearing wall and column are not necessary to construct the dome ceiling, builders and homeowners can get much more creative with their floor plan design. The open space and ample lighting allow for nearly infinite room configurations.
