Manufactured housing is built in a factory setting and delivered to a lot to be set up. This type of housing has to meet the Housing and Urban Development standards for construction, which many consider stricter than other housing codes since the homes are transported by truck to a site. Several axles located beneath the manufactured homes are fitted with tires and a truck pulls the home to its final location. Previously called mobile homes, technology in the last few decades has improved the quality and energy efficiency of these homes to the point where they’re equal to or better constructed than site-built homes. These homes can provide basic housing or be luxurious. Because they’re built in a factory, the cost of production from materials to labor is almost always lower than site-built homes. Homes are either placed on rented lots or on land-home packages, where one person or legal entity owns both the home and the lot.
