Zoning is type of regulation put on land in order to dictate what can be done with the land. There are many types of land zones such as agricultural, residential, commercial, open space, and industrial. Knowing what types of zones lie around your house is very important when selling a house. A house surrounded by residential and open space zones is much more likely to be valuable than a house surrounded by an industrial zone. No one wants to live next to a chemical plant. Zoning is even more than this though. A type of zone can be broken into multiple types to further protect the value of a property and limit how it is used. For instance, it can be used to prevent a 20 story condo from being built in the middle of a suburban neighborhood.
